Slide 4 The ICE-Electric Hybrid Power Train  

• An ICE-electric hybrid power train can recover some of the work done - by regenerative braking.

• This is especially relevant in low speed, stop-go driving.

• A hybrid system enables almost all engine operation to be near full load, and hence at high efficiency.

• This is done by on-off cycling of the engine at lower road speeds and by high gearing at higher road speeds.

• The excess energy is converted by a generator and stored in a battery.

• This stored energy can then be used in an electric motor when driving at low speed.

• It can also be used to supplement the ICE during acceleration or hill-climbing.

• This is especially relevant in high speed driving.

• The overall efficiency of the power train is thus increased, and the cycle-average can be doubled.
