The ICE-Electric Hybrid Power Train
-
An ICE-electric hybrid power train can recover some of the work done -
by regenerative braking.
-
This is especially relevant in low speed, stop-go driving.
-
A hybrid system enables almost all engine operation to be near full load,
and hence at high efficiency.
-
This is done by on-off cycling of the engine at lower road speeds and by
high gearing at higher road speeds.
-
The excess energy is converted by a generator and stored in a battery.
-
This stored energy can then be used in an electric motor when driving at
low speed.
-
It can also be used to supplement the ICE during acceleration or hill-climbing.
-
This is especially relevant in high speed driving.
-
The overall efficiency of the power train is thus increased, and the cycle-average
can be doubled.
